I watched awhile ago in the lower middle class area of a city two elderly people, I presume were man and wife, were holding hands and walking slowly down the sidewalk. There had been problems in this area and I wondered if they had far to go when they turned into a walkway to what I thought was their house of residence and let themselves in. I was relieved but wondered if they had a family grown up and grandchildren but my mind came to the reality of my profession where more and more elderly couples I had had for over three decades suffered tragedy by the death of the husband as men usually are outlived by their wives.
I more and more answer calls for estimates for work and knocking at the door am met by women with grey hair and sad eyes as they tell me their husband had died. There was a time marriage was forever and divorce was not so common.
The song in the ink is one of the most beautiful Roy Orbison ever recorded and carries a message and takes me back decades to my youth when divorce was not so common.
