Tomorrow I attend by invitation the graveside service of a man I worked with for years. A man who worked hard, but was set upon until I was given the position of union rep as well as Health and Welfare rep. My union manager knew what was up and did this purposely because he knew the man I defended and fought for and his history of being on the streets at age 14 working because his father deceased and his sibblings were younger and his mother struggled to raise them. He was a man straight forward and he was very fond of me for defending him. He confided in me a lot and depended on my confrontational attitude with management whose lives I made miserable.
There is much injustice everywhere and that man suffered the abduction and rape and murder of his young five year old daughter by a sex offender out on parole. I went to the childrens section where she was buried and broke at the head stones with little cars and dolls on left there by the sibblings of deceased children. I have told this story before but I am very aware that God favors the broken and hurting. His wife wants me there and I expect to say a few poignant words. The police here were not proper and decent with him either and once again my anger increases at this. He never bothered or hurt anyone ever.
Such are life's tragedies and perhaps God sees I have compassion on those who cannot defend themselves. The graveyard he will be interred at holds one of my aunts and uncle, two young teens who died tragically, a friend who was so big he required a steel coffin and he was the heaviest I ever had to help carry. It was spring and there was a hill six of us had to carry him up. When we got out of the hearse the undertaker told us he hoped we had eaten our wheaties that morning. I was the ONLY one who wore deep tread work boots and the others were almost useless slipping and sliding in the mud.
His wife is depending on me to help her get $$$ for a settlement to his exposure to asbestos that killed him in six weeks from the time the legal firm I found was retained by me.
At times like this I consider the headstone of two women who I think were sisters but on their tombstone one day I was visiting my grand parents grave and noted the message that stated "There is no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal." It is true and BTW it is past the time for me to visit that place soon and spend a weekend in the home town of my mother. Many memories come to me when I am there but there lingers a sadness within me for the times past when my parents would take us four children to visit my Irish grandparents.
