MANY nationalities and ethnic groups changed, shortened or translated their names, not just Jews, if you want to be fair and accurate, and “how come?,” in the case of MY Polish grandparents, to be MORE AMERICAN. During the World Wars it was very “unpopular” to have certain ethnic-sounding names. They shortened their name and forbade my mother to speak Polish or Russian, a huge loss, actually, but Americans with names that sounded like the names of the people with whom we were at war were discriminated against, I guess some things never change.
I'm sorry to hear that your mother was forbidden to speak her language. Both Polish and Russian are rich, expressive and beautiful languages.
On the other hand, while newcomers to America wanted to become more American, in other countries (specifically Europe), some people changed their surnames to
appear 'local' as part of an attempt to infiltrate governments.
Funny story: someone asked my mom one time, what her name was before she shortened it to 'Green'. Green, of course, was her married name. Her last name was Wray, and I hope that I'm not related to the FBI director!! I've been told that I'm Scotch-Irish on my mom's side, but I don't know much about the other side of the family...
